NCC arrests 230 pirates, impounds N250m goods

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), yesterday announced the arrest of no fewer than 230 pirates, and impounded goods worth N250million across the country in the last few months.

The commission's Director-General, Mr Adebambo Adewopo, said this while briefing newsmen on progress recorded in the last few months, adding that with the support of the police who have

provided security back-up for its inspectors, it was able to remove pirated materials worth about N250 millions from the market.

According to him, the commission has secured conviction of two accused caught with hundreds of pirated materials.

He said hologram is being re-activated to enhance anti-piracy enforcement and he gave the breakdown of pirated goods confiscated in various states to include, Katsina 80,000 books, Lagos, DVDS, CDS VCDS Valued at over N1million. In Kaduna where four persons were arrested for film piracy, Adamawa already had nine persons in the net, while five were arrested in Oyo for pirating goods worth N2.5million.

Adewopo said the campaign against piracy is on-going, adding that zonal managers were directed to embark on massive enforcement and sanitation exercise to ensure the criminal act i stopped.

He said operations of the commission have been decentralised, so as to reach target areas in a short period, adding that piracy has a far-reaching consequence on the economy and all hands must be on deck to wipe it out.
